25 Reasons why I love Oprah - Number 24: She loves her man

Reason 24: She loves her man

Oprah and Stedman have been together a long time. Especially in terms of show business relationship cycles. As busy and demanding as her job and lifestyle are (I'd imagine it's pretty hard to run a media empire) she's always valued her relationship. And he's a great man who has always supported her. Just like my Ryan. Best of all, they're a real life couple who laugh at and correct each other. I hope they have more opportunity to enjoy one another's company after the show wraps.

25 Reasons why I love Oprah - Number 25: She's a journalist

I've decided to create a countdown in honor of Oprah's exit at the end of the month. It would be literally impossible (logistically and emotionally) for me to encompass all that she is and what she has meant to me and millions of other viewers in a single post. With that said, I plan to post a small Oprah "aha moment" or tidbit each day leading up to the final show on May 25th. This is my tribute to the lady I've grown to know and admire, but wasn't able to ever physically see. I hope that fans and haters alike will browse through these posts and relish the experiences so many of us have shared through The Oprah Winfrey show over the past 25 years.

Reason 25: She's a journalist

I've always loved to write and learn new things. Though my career choice was undeniably influenced by Oprah's example I always imagined our common interest and ability in the field would bind us together. Yeah, I know, if that was the criteria it would also bind the two of us with two gazillion other wannabees. I'm different though. She had a radio job when she was 19, so did I. Our paths have been similar. Maybe one day they will cross. Until then, here's to the O.

25 Reasons why I love Oprah - Number 23: Nate Berkus

Reason 23: Nate Berkus

This post shouldn't need much explanation. Nate is adorable and uber talented. Yes, I wish that he could be my on call decorator and make every apartment (and one day house!) I live in a beautiful sanctuary, but we all know that's not gonna happen. What's better than having Nate at my fingertips is knowing that his appearances taught all of us how to make our homes more comfortable and reflective of our true selves in simple ways. He did more than decorate rooms. Like Oprah, Nate changed lives and managed to stay gorgeous through it all.

25 Reasons why I love Oprah - Number 21: "Everybody gets a car!"

Reason 21: "Everybody gets a car!"

I remember the premiere episode of season 19, the "Wildest dreams" season not only because it started with an instantly world renowned car give-a-way but because my little brother was in intensive care. Austin had just had steel rods placed in his back and was having a rough recovery. My parents were tired and worn, spending every moment at Austin's side and school had recently started for Jake and I. Regardless of what was going on in life, we were all worried.

I turned on Oprah that afternoon, like I had so many times before and since, not knowing how the show would touch me. I didn't mind that I wasn't one of the people that got to run from the studio out into the parking lot to claim their gift, I didn't want a car, I wanted to spread joy. While chaos ensued, when ever possible I looked for Oprah and literally saw the combination of joy and generosity radiate from her. If I was able I would share that kind of joy and excitement with anyone and everyone I could. In that moment I wanted to share that love, hope and generosity with my family who was in need of a supportive buoying spirit. Oprah taught me just what she intended to that day, that dreams do come true and that hope and generosity induced happiness still exists. I hope to one day be responsible for the generous impetus that begins a never-ending  joyful and thankful domino effect.
(Feel free to stop the clip after once the rapping starts. Not everyone can be Will.i.am if you know what I mean.)

25 Reasons why I love Oprah - Number 22: "Oprah's Big Give"

Reason 22: "Oprah's Big Give"

Remember this, anyone? Can we say, shades of OWN? We all should have noticed Oprah's extracurricular television activities with the debut of her own reality show, "Oprah's Big Give" in early 2008. It did what no other reality show has done, pitted people against one another in a competition to determine who could be the most generous of them all.

My favorite memory of the show is when a contestant bought out all the flowers a street vendor had and then handed them out to people as they were driving by. It still brings a smile to my heart. I plan to do that someday.

I think we could use more of that kind of insight in the world today. Which we can, through OWN, for now at least. "The Big Give" didn't garner great ratings and was canceled after just one season. I hope a similar fate doesn't await the network. So, give a little. If you have the channel please check it out and support the uplifting programming!

Five reasons why I love "Glee" and a special birthday wish...

Hey yo, I'm back. I know, I'm MIA for three weeks and now this is my second post this week, it's like I'm trying to show off or something. That or I got off work early and am house sitting for my parents and had nothing better to do. Your guess is as good as mine. Moving on, as promised I have a special countdown for you today.

I am not the first to write about this or even the one millionth, I'm rather behind the times on this subject. I've decided to share my feelings regardless of their timeliness due to the aura, the pervasive quality that surrounds this show and my initial stone cold denial and objection to it. It's not the best show out there. The acting is far from remarkable and the story lines lack complexity. Yet, the show as a whole is wholesome and reflective of real life on the level that everyone has their own weird quirks and we all make mistakes when our minds are clouded over by emotion and the stress of life happenings. Some are shallow and some are more complex and personal, forevermore these are the -

Five reasons I love

1. Celebration of Music
I love music, pure and simple. Though I know there were days before I honed my auditory skills to notice any and every note played, it's difficult for me to recall those times because music has played such an immense role in my life. It sounds kind of cheesy for me to say that as someone who has never been able to read music, sing (except for dramatically in the car, alone) or play an instrument, though it hasn't been without want.  I even have a guitar that I would desperately love to learn to play to prove it. I guess my ignorance holds me back, though I don't plan to use that excuse forever. What I am trying to get at is this, this show is a realization of all my music dreams. Oh how I wish I would have been able to join a club where I could perform with no inhibitions. The show covers songs from different genres and decades, which relates to my taste from Sugarland and Jay-Z, to U2 and Bryan Adams. They don't allow music style to block the expression, they have a freedom to cover any song they want in any style or fashion they want and I love that. If Ryan ends up teaching at a middle or high school he will start a glee club, not necessarily of his own fruition, but because he will be tried of me begging him to offer the opportunity I didn't have, and may have been too cool to allow myself to have, to other kids.

2. Nail polish line
The show has its own nail polish line! How cool is that? Not necessarily that cool, but since I quit getting my nails done almost two years ago I find myself excitable by nail decoration. I actually went to buy this at Sephora but couldn't find it, and as a self respecting 24 year old woman I didn't ask the attendant to help me find it. Maybe I'll order it online...

3. Sue Sylvester

Oh Sue, where to start? Ryan recently asked me if I would be opposed to naming our first daughter Sue. We both despise the name. I think he's just dreaming of the fun he would have watching our child torment and push people around just because she see's them as subservient beings, and that's the way Sue sees it (if you are familiar with the show and did not laugh at that last line you are heartless and just might be related to Sue). Sue is drunk with power and even though she's ruthless to a level of harsh intensity, you just can't help but gawk and roll with laughter. She's the awesome rebel we all wish we could be some days and yet underneath her rough exterior is a person that wants to see everyone be happy and succeed. She just wants to take the credit for the whole thing.

4. Mash Ups

I have no idea why I never thought about the concept of combining to songs together before. It's a great way to juxtapose situations or moods, as in the video above, where the "Glee" girls mash Beyonce's sultry and resonant "Halo" with a long favorite of mine KC and The Sunshine Band's "Walking on Sunshine". Two songs about love and how the emotion and experience makes them feel, recorded decades apart, put together to form a hopping and feel good tune. Ryan and I have loosely tried our hand at a mash up of Taylor Swift's "Love Story" starting at the point when she's not sure if he's going to come back for her, our version doesn't have him coming back to propose. So instead of wallowing in what might have been we turn to Cee Lo Green's "Forget You". We'll keep working on it, watch out YouTube. And speaking of Taylor (lovely transition, right?) she's actually picked up on the mash up trend as well (probably something she picked up while she was spending time with Cory Monteith but not dating him, and definitely not writing "Mine" about him...). Remember her American Music Awards performance? If not, here it is...
5. Artie

Last, but certainly not least, I love "Glee" because of Artie. It's not even the wheelchair that rouses memories of my bright and funny green-eyed baby brother, but those stand out glasses and his sweet personality that can turn feisty without a moments notice. I know, had this show been around before, Austin and I would have spent many hours laughing and singing.

Having said all this, I understand the urge to fight against the bandwagon mentality. Believe me, I've been there. I heard the rants and the raves of "Glee" and wasn't interested. I actually began to loathe the show when it started winning awards that rightfully belonged to my staple television show, "30 Rock". All of this happened long before I finally settled in to try it. And although I won't be the fan that tweets about how they can't wait for the next season to start the night after the season finale, I will continue to watch and sing within the confines of my living room.

Today is a very special day and in honor of my music dedicated post, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to share a treasured memory with you. I don't remember the first day it started, but I can recall singing "Don't Worry, Be Happy" with my mom on the way to day care everyday when I was three or four. Ever since, the melody of that song and the words of the chorus has bonded us, only her and I in a special way. Thanks for those memories, mom and for your undying encouragement and support. Here's to us! Happy Birthday.

This is outdated, I know - The Oscars, A future Oscar winner prediction and current happenings

Hey there, I'm back. I know, you're shocked. It only took me three weeks to write a second blog post. In my defense, I wrote the majority of this post on March 4, a mere two days after my blog debut. At that point I was only a few days late on my Oscar wrap up, now I'm beating a dead horse. I even watched "Julie & Julia" during my hiatus, hoping to inspire myself to make this a routine. Instead of spurring my blog ambitions it only added to my excitement over this...

Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady"

I digress, but I'm not obsessed. I'll explain this a bit more later. So what can I say, I got distracted. That, and I need to get internet at my apartment. Nevertheless, let's jump in. As I promised at the end of the last post, first I'm going to give my 411 on the Oscars.

THE OSCARS

I never like to say, "I told you so," but I was rather worried about this hosting match up from the get go. I even tweeted about it, check it out if you don't believe me. Not that they aren't notable actors, I fell for James Franco in his Harry Osbourne Spider-Man days and I've admired most of Anne Hathaway's role choices - primarily in "The Devil Wears Prada" and "Rachel Getting Married", but they just aren't Oscar host material. By the way, if you are trying to jazz things up (aka: target a younger demographic) and make the show young and hip don't reference the show outright as young and hip. Just a pointer. Anyway, the duo were no Martin and Baldwin, but I don't think they deserve the bad press they are getting. Anne was fun (a bit too much at times) and James was, well, apathetic.

It was disappointing that the highlight of the night came near the beginning of the show.

Beginning with Kirk Douglas and his entrance, cane and all. Presenting best actress in a supporting role, envelope open in hand, delaying the inevitable, Kirk was distracted by anything and everything. Finally he announced the winner, Melissa Leo. I loved "The Fighter" (though Christian Bale was the real stand out in the film) and she deserved the award. I was happy that rumors she was knocked out of the running due to personal admissions the industry didn't agree with turned out to be false. I'm glad talent won over politics. And, at the same time, she made Oscar history, henceforth known as Melissa "you know what" Leo.

Overall, the show was average. Nothing spectacular, in part due to the fact that all four front-runners took home top honors, which was deserved, just made for an anti-climatic show. And if it was up to me, I'd have James and Anne give it another try in 30 or 40 years. Try a young and hip Oscars then. Now, on to other things...

The Meryl Effect

There was an obvious gaping hole at the show on Sunday. A seat was open that hasn't been left vacant at the Oscars in a string of years. Meryl's seat. Being nominated 16 time garners your own seat, don't you think? I bet the seat has a gold placard with her name on it. I guess this is where I should begin to explain my fascination with Meryl Streep.

In 2005, sometime around her 14th or 15th Oscar nomination, I started to take notice of this lady. "Prada" incited the full fledged exploration, but I had noticed her quiet yet powerful grace and attention demanding performances earlier, most likely in "The Hours". At the point of my recognition Meryl was about to break records in becoming the most nominated actress in the history of the Academy Awards. This struck me. Many talented people spend the better part of their lives making movies and never even get nominated once. Today, Meryl has won twice (not since 1982, I believe) and been nominated 16 times. Here's to hoping nomination number 17, already predicted to come about through "The Iron Lady" (I only have to wait till the end of the year to see it, joy!) will be the charm. It would be cool to see her win in my lifetime. Though I'm pulling for Meryl to win at least one more golden statuette, I'm fairly certain someone else in the family eventually will as well. Enter Mamie Gummer.

I know, the name in horrendous. That said, she is Meryl Streep's daughter and could possibly share the staggering acting ability. Who knew that was hereditary? Anyway, after missing Meryl's rise to fame, I've done my best to keep tabs on Miss Gummer. I'm merely interested, not obsessed, in discovering whether she will one day earn her own golden placard at the Kodak Theater. She's been in a few movies "Evening", "Stop/Loss" and "Taking Woodstock" but her stage work and now TV resume (repeat guest star on "The Good Wife" and ensemble character on "Off The Map" - which Ryan has predicted to soon be "off the air", hilarious that guy) has established her budding career.

I think she's pretty good and just might make it. Keep you eye on this one. Here's the catch, Mamie is not alone. Her little sister, Grace is also trying to get a break into the big time. She got a pretty decent chance too, the central lead on a little Teen Nick show called "Gigantic". I guess I'm behind the times because I don't remember there even being a Teen Nick channel when I watched Nickelodeon. There was Nick Jr. and regular Nick. I guess times change. Anyway, though I am not a teen, I found myself watching the show. Not due to Grace's alluring talent, for she doesn't have much, kinda missed out on that gene. I instead got pulled into the show thanks to the over the top teen romance and drama set in LA. I watch this show for one reason, to laugh. But my watching days are limited, as I've heard the show won't be coming back for an additional season. Too bad for Grace, time to get someone else who owes her mom a favor to give her a job.
Needless to say, the name will most likely prevail through one daughter, but not the other.

Well, I think that's enough ranting for now. Here are just a quick tidbits of info about current happenings:
1. As of now I am tied for 2nd place in my office NCAA Basketball Bracket Tournament
2. I bought a Vegas dress last week. It's black and FUCHSIA! I know, should be interesting. It's pretty and fun and I'm excited!
3. Lately I have not been able to say no to any entertainment related activity when has resulted in the following plans:
April - Vegas Trip - Celine and possibly Criss Angel or The Lion King
May - Wicked! The show is coming to Boise and I'm currently reading the book, weird!
June - You all know about this, Tim. :) Oh yeah, I got VIP Pit passes and am in the Pre-Party drawing! I will keep you posted on these developments.
July - Katy Perry and maybe just maybe Owl City in Utah.
September - TAYLOR in SLC, whenever tickets go on sale. SLC people hit me up if you know before me. Thanks!

That's all for now. Thanks for reading and caring about my crazed entertainment ramblings. Not sure what I will talk about next time, probably my new favorite TV show. The one I resisted and made fun of people for watching before I gave into the curious desire. Yeah, that's what we'll talk about next. Laters.

And so it begins...

I've wanted to start a blog for a while, for a long while. I had big ideas and lots of people encouraged me to start but time after time it seemed like one thing always held me back. Focus. What can I commit myself to writing about on a regular basis when my interests change even more regularly? Finally it came to me, why limit myself? Sure my posts might not always be consistent, but who am I trying to impress here? Nobody. So let it stand, on record that I am not here to convert anyone to my beliefs or profess that I am an expert of any kind. I've missed writing and my thoughts are of some value (maybe more to me than you), so I've decided to express them. And lucky for you, I've decided to share. So, with that, here we go. Disclaimer: This is a creative outlet. Contrary to what you will read here, I am a contributing member or society and not just some crazed fan/stocker of anything and everything entertainment based. I'm not obsessed, I swear.

I'm pretty excited about this blog thing so I'm going to be covering a lot of material in this first post. It will be worth the read, I promise. I'll call this section of the post,
"The World According to Kayla"
The following topics are happenings that have touched my heart and mind in a myriad of ways over the past week or so.

1. Living Philanthropic
My new position at work has me researching blog styles and trends. So, I see a lot of blogs every week, a lot. None have struck me quite like Carlo's. I stumbled upon his blog, Living Philanthropic last Friday and was instantly awestruck. This every day, middle class young man is on a mission and is changing lives everyday. 313 days ago he made a lofty goal to start donating to a different charity everyday for a year. He is now only 52 days away from achieving his goal. Carlo touched my heart and inspired me to do my part to help make the world a better place. I'm still pondering just how I am going to live up to his inspiration, so feel free to leave me suggestions if you would like. I do know that I am thankful for Carlo and the spirit of generosity that he carries and has spread through the blogosphere. If you need a pick me up or just want to feel enthralled, check out this site.

2. Mail man Santa brought me a gift in March!
My family will understand the mail man Santa reference here and that's all that really matters. It's an ode to Austin and all the love, joy and excitement he found in every day of life. Anyway, I got a very special gift in the mail yesterday. Tickets to this show...
That's right. Celine is coming back to Vegas, so I am too. Ryan and I have been dreaming about a big vacation for a while. We talked about going to Europe and then I started dreaming about going to Australia. But for some reason Ryan wasn't so comfortable with that. Aside from the fact that he says he's afraid of the "gigantic spiders" he claims they have there, I think he was more worried I would come home with one of these...
Isn't he adorable? Anyway, I digress. Big vacation plans got pushed aside for another time. We will finally go on these big trips most likely "when we retire", that's what Ryan likes to say at least. So, instead of forgetting any get away, we decided to plan a quick long weekend trip to Vegas in early April. I am so excited to see Celine's new show and will provide a thorough review when I return. I'm not quite done here just yet though. Believe it or not, more than my insatiable Celine fan urge was calling me to Nevada on this exact weekend. Sin City is playing host to another small event the first weekend in April that I had failed to notice.

That's right, the Academy of Country Music Awards are taking place in Las Vegas the same night we have tickets to go see Celine! Fate was calling me alright, just to give me a slap in the face! All is well though, I will be on Tim McGraw and T-Swift high alert all weekend long. Hopefully I will have some pictures to help depict the adventures of our trip as well. This serves as a perfect segue to...

3. Tim McGraw - June 16, 2011

So, the concert is finally official because tickets go on sale this weekend! McGrawFan (yeah, that's me) pre-sale starts Friday morning, so wish me the best. Still waiting for a run in like we had on August 6, 2006. I am psyched for the "Emotional Traffic" Tour featuring Mr. McGraw, Luke Bryan (honestly, not that excited for him) and The Band Perry! I love "If I Die Young". Take a listen below if you haven't heard it before.

Well, I still need to cover the Oscars and my prediction regarding the legacy of an interesting acting family. That should keep you on your seat until we meet next. That's all.
